How to Apply

Faculty from all University of Minnesota campuses are eligible to apply for the IAS Residential Fellowship.

The Institute covers one-half of the fellow's B-base salary and fringe (up to a maximum of $30,000); the fellow's home college is responsible for the remaining salary and fringe. Residential fellowships are not leaves; fellows may still have responsibilities in their home departments. Fellowships are intended to give the faculty member time to work on research and creative work, therefore faculty members may not teach (regular or overload) during their fellowship semester. Faculty members may not accept both an IAS fellowship and a single-semester leave in the same academic year.

We encourage scholars who are engaged in collaborative work to apply in teams of two or three as Faculty Fellows. Those applying as part of a team may submit the same project description in their individual applications. Each applicant should also indicate precisely what her or his contribution to the final project will be. Applications from faculty applying in teams will be evaluated on individual merit as well as part of the group.

We are pleased to announce a new collaboration with the University of Minnesota Press funded by the Mellon Foundation, the Quadrant program. The Quadrant program will include four areas: Design and Architecture, Environmental Sustainability, Global Cultures, and Health and Society. The Institute will host both internal and external fellows whose work is related to these four themes. If you are interested in affiliating with one of these four areas, please so indicate on the application form and describe in your project proposal how your project relates to the theme.

Faculty wishing to apply to become Faculty Fellows for 2008-09 should provide six copies of the following:

•  A description of the research or creative project that will be undertaken during the period of residence and a discussion of the ways that residency in the Institute for Advanced Study specifically would advance the project. Either specify the interdisciplinary nature of your project, or discuss how residency at the IAS would be particularly beneficial for your work. If your project has a connection to one of the Institute's research/creative collaboratives or to the theme of the University Symposium (which for 2008-09 will be on “Body & Knowing”), please describe the connection—there is no requirement that faculty fellows be affiliated with either a collaborative or the symposium, but if you see such connections, we want to know about them. If you wish to be a part of the Press-IAS Quadrant program, please discuss that in your proposal. The proposal should be no longer than 1,500 words.
•  An abstract of your proposal, which should not exceed 200 words
•  A curriculum vitae.
•  Explanation if you are available only one semester (for example, if you must teach a course that is offered only in Spring semester). The IAS reserves the final decision on scheduling fellowships.
•  Completed cover sheet (fillable pdf) with endorsement from department chair and dean or chancellor. Please allow sufficient time for your chair and the appropriate dean or chancellor to review your proposal before the deadline.

Applications for Faculty Residential Fellows should be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on Friday November 30. Please submit six copies of your application to Ann Waltner, Director, Institute for Advanced Study, 131 Nolte Center, 315 Pillsbury Dr. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455. Campus mail should be addressed as follows or delivery will be delayed: 131 NCCE, mail code 0095.

Ann Waltner may be reached at waltn001@umn.edu or 626-5149. We hope to make decisions on fellowship recipients by the beginning of the spring semester.
