Still Present Pasts

Still Present Pasts is an exhibit which will be on display at Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis April 14-June 2, 2007. Professor Richard Lee (Psychology) is coordinating the Minnesota Still Present Pasts project. Sponsors include the Institute for Advanced Study, the Asian American Studies Program, the Consortium for Study of the Asias, the McKnight Arts and Humanities Endowment, the Office for Public Engagement, and the CLA Scholarly Events Fund at the University of Minnesota; Intermedia Arts; Korean Quarterly; Travelers Arts and Diversity Committee, and SpectrumTrust of the Saint Paul Foundation.

Still Present Pasts is a multimedia art exhibit that explores the legacies of the Korean War and encourages reflection about the devastation of war for all Americans. The exhibit features video, installation, and performance by Korean American artists (immigrants, U.S.-born, adoptees), alongside oral histories of Korean American war survivors and their families.

The Minnesota Still Present Pasts Project also intends to sponsor a series of related educational, outreach and artistic events for the Twin Cities community to coincide with the exhibit's run. These events will showcase the broad range of Korean American voices in Minnesota – from local artists to church leaders, from Korean elders to Korean adoptees – and will raise awareness about the devastations of war for all Americans through education and dialogue.

Still Present Pasts also includes a Spring 2007 course, AAS 3501 Asian America Through Arts and Culture: Still Present Pasts.

You can support the Minnesota Still Present Pasts project by making an online gift through the University of Minnesota Foundation.
