Curriculum Associated with the University Symposium

Two new courses have been designed as integral components of the University Symposium on "The Politics of Populations."

GloS 5900: "The Politics of Populations" is a one-credit course offering graduate students an opportunity to participate in the research collaborative associated with the University Symposium. Students will be full members of the collaborative, including serving as session leaders. The course will be offered in both fall and spring semesters. For further information, contact Mary Jo Maynes at mayn001@umn.edu.

HSem3040H: "Politics of Populations: Epidemics, Race, and Hunger," a three-credit honors seminar, will be offered by Professor Jeffrey Pilcher in spring, 2006, providing undergraduates with an opportunity to participate in the symposium. The course will begin by considering how societies have viewed population alternately as a source of political strength or as a threat to limited resources. Students will next examine modern epidemics such as HIV-AIDS and SARS in comparison with historical outbreaks of the Black Death, yellow fever, and the Spanish flu. Social and scientific conceptions of racial difference will form another important focus of the class. A final set of readings will consider hunger both as a longing experienced by migrants for the culture, particularly foods, of their homeland and as the physical consequence of food shortages and unequal distribution. Students will attend University Symposium events as part of this course. For further information, contact Jeffrey Pilcher at pilcherj@umn.edu.

In addition, we have identified almost ninety courses in our regularly offered curriculum which are directly related to the theme of "Politics of Populations." More information can be found on the course guide or from the individual department or instructor.
